Bird won the rookie of the year honor in 1980, then went on to lead the Celtics to the NBA Finals five times, including three championships. Throughout his 13-year career, his head-to-head match-ups with Los Angeles Laker Ervin Magic Johnson became the stuff of legend. Bird was a 12-time NBA All-Star and, together with Celtics teammates Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale, formed arguably the greatest frontline in NBA history. Bird was the leagues most valuable player three times (1984-86) and was named to the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996. His jersey number, 33, has been retired by the Boston Celtics.
