New Collision and Shielding Systems
Designed with a new 360-degree collision and shielding systems-representing the biggest innovations to the game engine in four years-FIFA 09 delivers more responsive, intelligent and realistic physical action than ever before. The combination of these enables players to behave according to their physical attributes. Player speed, direction and strength now determine everything from the severity of the collision to the outcome of possession. Plus, contact occurs with shoulders, arms and legs. Stronger players possess the strength to knock down smaller players or use their body and arms to shield the ball in challenges. These changes to the animation system reward the skillful gamer during one-on-one situations between attackers and defenders. Tuned acceleration attributes enable swifter players to possess quicker first steps and gain advantage in sprints.

PC-Specific Controls
FIFA 09 also features new customizable mouse and keyboard controls that deliver deeper, more intuitive command over your squad for more fluid soccer action. Now utilize the mouse as a point-and-click tool to send teammates on runs, make pinpoint accurate passes, and blast powerful shots on target. Plus, you have the tools to draw up trick moves using the mouse or perform one of 32 skill moves in your arsenal, including new scoop turns, rainbow flicks, heel-to-heel knocks and ball rolls just like Ronaldinho.

4 out of 5 stars it's real entertainment.   August 6, 2010

4 out of 5 stars Fun, but has shortcomings   August 4, 2010
S. Waiblinger
I have to say that while I think the game is super fun to play, it has too many shortcomings that prevent me from giving it 5 stars.

Players love being offsides more than they like running in this game. Your players are offsides on goal kicks half the time for crying out loud. That said, after playing this game for a while you get used to the runs that your teammates make and can more easily prevent being offsides, but it is still an issue.

Defending is a joke. To defend, just stand in the way of the oncoming player. This sounds simple enough, although it is really hit or miss. If there was a dedicated tackle button (other than slide-tackle which you can do at any time), that would be nice.

Free kicks are near impossible. Despite practicing a lot, I have only scored once off of numerous free kicks.

When shooting, it is easier to kick the ball over the net than it is to pass first grade math. Why make the power meter go so high if the ball flies over the net even when you're barely above half power?

Clearing the ball sucks. There is a dedicated "clear the ball" button, but somehow players lost all their strength kicking the ball miles over the net and can only clear it 15 yards. You're better off using the "cross" button to try and clear the ball.

While it may seem like there are lots of negative things about this game, I will say that there are far more positives and the game is definitely worth buying if you want a cheap soccer game to play. With Fifa 11 coming out soon, the price of Fifa 10 should drop enough so that it becomes a better purchasing choice than Fifa 09.

3 out of 5 stars Soccer games are like old girlfriends....   August 2, 2010
M. Eilman
...You stop seeing them for a while, then you see them again and they look great and you wonder why you ever stopped seeing them. Then you see them again for a week and you remember ALL of the things you hated.

As far as soccer games go, this one is pretty good. The scoring is kept to a reasonable low, goal scoring is usually consistent with a true soccer game (meaning you know what a good shot is without playing the game for weeks), and the default game lenth is excellent. The controls are simple enough to turn on the game and go.

That being said, this suffers from many of the problems I have always experienced in all soccer games:

-The computer always has an advantage because there are 11 people on a team actively moving to improve their teams position. The same can be said of American Style Football, but the break in play, the fact that lineman cannot catch passes, etc, makes the game so that a human has an idea what is going on with each and every player. When the computer switches you on defense, you are often runnign the wrong way, because you were below the ball and you get swtiched to a player above the ball. One step in the wrong direction is all it takes to get beat in soccer, and in this game.

-Offsides - I love offsides and I know why the rule exists, but my teammates are continually going offside - and they stay there! It's not like they made a run and I poorly timed my pass. I usually have to either bring the ball up the field with a striker or, if I am using a midfielder, take the ball almost to the end line to make a pass into the box - by this time the defense has caught up and the passing lane is blocked.

-Computer cheats - The computer cannot play smarter, so at higher skill levels, it cheats. At the semi-pro level, my guys routinely get taken down from behind by a defended two steps behind, and there isn't even a free kick given. Some games my striker can outrun the defense, others he can't -- and the guys are the same speed! It is as if the computer predetermines that you are going to have a good game, or a bad game, even before you kick off!

-Dumb moves - The game clearly needs an anti dumb move intelligence added. One example - on a corner, I go up for the header - press 0 to head - the ball goes over his head to be eventually touched by another attacker in the corner, who immediately shoots the ball out of bounds (also controlled by the 0 button). Another time I was trying to pass the ball out of the goalie box and my guy kicked it into the goal! There was no teamate even near the goal.

Most of these problems probably would not matter too much in a 2 player environment, but this is something I play as a destresser after the kids go to bed, and it doesn't destress. Buy another football, baseball, or shoot 'em up game. Skip soccer - it just can't be done well in a computer game.

5 out of 5 stars Love Fifa   July 27, 2010

I think this is one of the best of Fifa games out there, I didn't like EA's SouthAfrica WorldCup as much as I liked this one.

4 out of 5 stars Que golazo!   July 21, 2010
L. Williams (Atlanta, GA United States)
So far this game is really fun and I am winning! This is my first futbol(soccer) video game so I'm not always sure what I am doing and sometimes I hit the wrong button. For the casual gamer there are a lot of controls to be learned but I am getting the hang of it. I like that there are a variety of teams and leagues to choose from and in manager mode you get to work on your "career". The commentation is even cool and surprisingly is not getting on my nerves. The graphics are not that great, but maybe they were improved for 2010. I don't own that version yet. This game has wifi connection so you can play against friends, check the leaderboards and update your squad list.
