4 out of 5 stars good game play, bugs in extra features   September 23, 2009
ramazon (California, USA)
The main game works really well. There is no product code to enter, but you do have to sign up for 'steam' account, although it does not allow online game play.

Anyways, I love the graphics, and I love how you can create your own player and edit. I think the levels are pretty fair. superstar is almost too difficult to beat, but all star seems challenging enough. I like how you can't 'cheat' so much in this game by having a 'go to' unstoppable move, like in many games. The overall game is very fair, and there's no sense of 'ice-skating' effect. Also, the guys don't jump unrealistically high, and the foul calls are overall fair. You can even take charges.

Passing is quite fair also. But this game can get pretty complex. If you want to use plays, you have to memorize what they are, and fair enough, there's even a training session for plays.

But there is a weird bug in this PC version. The dunk competition doesn't work. The buttons that should work all of the sudden don't work. Also, there is streetball where you can play 21, but your player ends up always shooting airballs, even if you press the button at the right time. The same problem with some drills. You only shoot airballs. Weird. Maybe it's just my controller? Anyone have the same issue?

But I stick to the basic league game playing, and it works fine. I'm not a real gamer, but I love basketball, and it keeps me entertained.

5 out of 5 stars What a game!   August 27, 2009

The NBA 2K9 is definitely the best basketball game I have ever played so far. Keep in mind I have nearly played every basketball game in LIVE series since 2000.

Comparing to EA LIVE series, the idea of 2K series is to make the game as realistic as possible. People switched from LIVE series may find it is really hard to dunk in this game in the beginning. True, unlike LIVE series in which you can dunk whenever you want ( there were even separate buttons for dunk/layup and shoot), it requires some skills if you want to dunk successfully ( yes, you do get blocked if you dunk forcefully). But that is the fun to play basketball, in reality, you can't just pull up if somebody is putting his weight on you or two people are standing in front of you. However, there is no online mode for PC version of this game, so it is really frustrating and one should wait for 2k10 which should remedy this.

Pros:
1. Very nice graphics. But you need a better than average graphics card. One reviewer said he was not able to play this game using an integrated graphics card, that's almost for sure.

2. A controller is almost a must if you play it on computer. Otherwise it is very hard for you to experience the free control of your player. I use XBOX360 controller with PC receiver which works great.

3. This game requires skills. Some reviewers mention it is impossible to beat the most difficult level. It is probably true for those who do not have significant experience in basketball game. Being a guy who has beaten every LIVE basketball game in all difficulties level, I have to say I myself was struggling against the "Starter" level when I began to play this game. Only recently I was able to beat super star level with ease.

4. Lasting appeal is outstanding, especially if you have some friends who can play against you.

5. You can actually adjust the game experience in whichever way you want. In the Game Slider feature, you can change almost every aspect of your game, even towards a cheating level (100% 3 pointer).

6. You cannot just play one superstar and beat everybody like you did in LIVE series(Super Star Button lol). You will frequently get doubled if AI figures out you are using one player heavily, and if you don't pass out your ball to the correct person, you are in trouble.

Cons:
1. No online mode for PC version!! But it seems 2K10 will fix this.

2. Probably too hard for some casual gamers.

3. Spec requirements are high for entry-level gamers.

I have a 2-year old HP desktop with an Intel dual core CPU and integrated graphics. I'm able to hear the game but there is no picture. Game automatically closes 30 seconds after it is opened.

Got this game as a gift for my friend's 12 year old son for his birthday. It was shipped from Europe but nevertheless, it arrived on time. My friend's son is enjoying the game and the graphics are pretty cool.

This game got good graphics.
In short gameplay is great.

Minor critique: I had the xbox 360 controller. It was not the same controls as the Xbox 360 version. boo.
