5 out of 5 stars great ball   January 7, 2009

This is a fantastic ball. The quality is very evident from the first dribble. I highly recommend it to anyone who desires playing with a top flight ball.

5 out of 5 stars Official NBA Ball Vs. TF1000, NBA composite, Wilson Solution   January 6, 2009
I. Hernandez (los angeles, ca USA)
As an owner of all three balls and the short lived, much discussed NBA composite ball, I will evaluate the NBA ball and compare to the others.

The official NBA Ball comes out of the box really slick. It feels like nothing else a non-competitive player has played with before. Most of us that play it for fun usually just bought any ball and this is what we got used to playing with. When I brought both NBA ball types to games, people thought that the players hated the leather ball and were so sure of it, because of the slick feel. However, they never played with anything of this grade and didn't know what a leather ball felt like. It feels heavier as a reviewer said and takes a long time to break in. The best method of breaking it in for me was a two part process. 1. I got some leather conditioner, rubbed it with a rag and let it dry. 2. The next day I would go and shoot around with it for a few hours. Dribbling breaks it in and with this conditioner, it broke it at a faster rate. Now that it's broken in, it's gotten better with age. This is the benefit over the other major balls. The more you play with it, the better it feels. It holds air really well and doesn't leave scuff marks on your hands. However, it is a real sensitive ball and got scuffed easily. I am a short player and have small hands. I don't have any problems with this ball. It is more forgiving on the rim as a shooter and as many people have said, "it feels right". What that means? You would have to shoot around with it to know what I mean. It also has a distinct sound when you make a swish. It's a different sound than what the other balls make.

I also have the short lived NBA composite ball. When comparing with this ball, the NBA comp. ball feels great when you start playing with it. Everyone on my rec. team preferred it initially because it has great grip and knowing that the Pros played with it made them feel better (same goes true with the leather ball). After playing with it for weeks, it began to get worn in and lost some of it's grip. This is when the scuff marks on the hands began to happen. It was equivalent to little rug burns on the insides of the fingers (for me). It still felt pretty good but if we played with it for awhile, I would develop burns. I understand why the NBA players didn't like it. Now that you can get it on discount, it may worthwhile to get it. One, for novelty sake. Two, to shoot around with. It's good to shoot around with but once broken in, it's a bit rough.

The Wilson Solution (official college ball) is a great ball as well but also of the composite variety. It's nice overall but for the price, I'd rather have the official nba ball or the TF 1000.

The TF 1000 (official high school ball) is also a great ball and is probably the most popular ball in our rec. league. It has great grip and has a decent life. The reason why it's so popular is that the grip is as good as the NBA comp. ball but without the bad press. Even with the new ZK Pro, it still feels very similar to the Wilson Solution yet it's cheaper in price. The big difference with this ball and the NBA ball is that it still has a 'cheap' composite feeling that you can also find with the Neverflat and the composite TF ball. I've had the ball for quite some time and the quality has diminished since I first started playing with it. Just like the other non-leather balls, these others are bouncier and this may be what people are used to and what they will always prefer.

For the money, the ZK pro may be your best bet. For quality and durability, I would suggest spending a little extra on the NBA ball. The best in the world, (NBA players) probably are the only serious source on the matter and this is what they prefer.

4 out of 5 stars Proper Use and Review   November 30, 2008

Look... If you are reviewing an official NBA game ball, you can not be playing basketball for a couple of months. First of all: This ball needs a serious break-in time. (there are several ways to break this ball in) Secondly, this ball is much heavier than your cheap spalding/wilson/Nike etc. balls. This ball is made to be shot by men, who are mostly 6'0-7'6 with larger triceps... so at your 5'6 148 pds., do not review this ball.
I found that it is not wise to over inflate this ball. No one, out of over 50 people I have given this ball, actually enjoyed the feel or the shot path they had with this ball. Everyone who I have given this ball to shot their first 10 shots at least short. This is back to the fact that, they do not posses and have not trained to posses the muscles adequate that this ball requires. (which means they are mostly not shooting correctly in the first place and/or using cheap indoor/lighter/smaller balls throughout anytime on the courts.) If you notice an NBA game ball is warn and has a much browner color than this ball. The only people who enjoyed this ball, were people just impressed with the fact that this is the official ball. most people don't even believe this ROCK is the official game ball of the NBA. Not ONCE has this ball been selected in over 100 pick up games when I brought it to be a game ball. People don't like to miss and usually have small hands for this. I have finally trained myself to shoot this .... (YES, ROCK!) It deserves that name. Play with any other ball until you are good enough to make the NBA or train with this ball for at least 6 months. (That's what it takes - you have to have huge hands to palm this sucker) So... to wrap up, don't by little Jeffrey this ball for the hollidays unless he is a man-child!

I bought this ball for my dad and he loves it. I like the Wilson Soultion much better, though.

I just got this ball over Thanksgiving break. It still has plenty of hours left before it's broken in, but right away it feels great to shoot with this ball. Most people agree when they play with my ball.
