The sanitary grade 304 stainless steel used in Klean Kanteen bottles also has a low nickel content, further reducing exposure to potentially irritating substances. Easy to clean, the Klean Kanteen water bottles can be put in the dishwasher, or washed by hand with a brush and mild soap. Klean Kanteens come in sizes to meet the needs of the entire family. The 12 and 18-ounce containers are designed specifically for kids. In bottles designed for small hands, the 12 and 18 ounce bottles are available with sippy cup lid adapters along with the other sports cap options, and weigh just 6 and 8 ounces respectively. Adult sized 27 and 40 ounce Kanteens weigh just 8 and 11 ounces respectively, and are available with a choice polypropylene or steel caps. The openings are large enough to fit ice cubes, and the slim bottle design fits in most cup and bottle holders. Klean Kanteen water bottles are available with a variety of sports caps made with non-leaching polypropylene #5 or stainless steel. The sport, flat, and loop caps are interchangeable and fit all 12-, 18-, 27-, and 40-ounce stainless steel bottles securely. The Poly Sports Cap has a push release valve allowing you to drink on the go. The Flat Caps, available in polypropylene or stainless steel twist on and off securely. Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?

Kleen Kanteen with Sports Cap August 20, 2008
This is a great Eco-Friendly water bottle alternative. I gave them as gifts and they were well used by all (ages 4-70). I am going to order 2 more for friends who saw them and requested them.

I bought this canteen for my mom, and decided to buy one for myself. It's a great alternative to a plastic water bottle. Contrary to what other reviews say, the water has NEVER tasted like metal - it always tastes clean, and I don't have to worry about plastics leaching into my water. I've recommended it to all my friends.

Have the 27oz and love it. Fits into cup holders in both my car and every stair/treadmill machine I've been on. Wide mouth makes it easy to fill and clean. Water has a good taste...didn't notice any "metallic" stuff that some people mentioned here.
Yes, it costs a bit more than other, but the water is safer and the bottle will last you a long time. Worth it, in my opinion.

I bought two of these bottles to replace my plastic (toxic) bottles. They work perfectly and the water tastes so much better (no nalgene after taste). You might taste a slight metallic taste for the first bottle, but after that there is no after taste. The seals work very well on the bottle caps (both steel and plastic caps). The flip top design doesn't work so well since with a plastic bottle you can squeeze the air to make the water come out the sippy spout. Since you can't squeeze a metal bottle it is harder to get a sip out. I would recommend using the screw on caps. The hook on the cap is helpful for camping, I clip it to my pack. It is also cheaper to order the plastic cap and then buy the steel cap separately from another vendor. The bottles are also very light weight.
