Hints for reusing gel November 21, 2008 nmeskater 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The gel can be rinsed free of dead ants and parts, then melted in a double boiler -low heat (or microwave I am told). Return the gel to the washed container and allow it to cool. There are no old tunnels. Add new ants! My second batch of ants did better that the first. I ordered in June and as of today I had one ant still alive(Nov. 20). That is a very old ant! But I am not sure if the nutrients get used up? So I want new gel. I think the ant colony has been helpful in initiating coversations with my students about the natural life cycle. Whether you agree or not, I also discussed with a kindergarten student - who had stated in anger that he would just kill himself - the finality of death. I am an elementary school counselor, as you may have guessed. I was able to show him the ants at the bottom who would never be able to do anty things again. And yes I did all the other things that I was supposed to do by protocol including contacting the parent and no he did not have a plan. I think you would need to be very discerning on which student you used this with - but I did have students in one guidance class ask if the ants would come back to life. Just today a student was adamant that ants in his yard never died. My husband probably would agree with him!
Fantastic for Elementary Classrooms! May 16, 2008 N. Cowan (California) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I teach a class of very active first grade students. To enrich our studies of insects, I ordered the Ant Gel Habitat for the classroom. The kids and I were absolutely amazed by just watching the ants tunnel through the gel. More importantly, there is absolutely no maintenance...the gel is their food and water as well as their habitat. The gel tunnels did not collapse as sand will in a traditional ant farm. I will definitely order this product again!
Excellent! March 13, 2008 Mom Doerksen (Kansas, USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
My kids are really enjoying this ant farm. It's been two weeks now, and the ants are still doing fine. One great feature is that you don't have to feed them or add any water; they eat the gel that they're digging in (although not enough so you would notice).
It's not just a toy! January 14, 2008 Vivian Ruehlman 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is an interesting item. I didn't know what to expect when I registered this for my son and I thought we would deal with it if he really gets it on Christmas, well, he did. Come to realize that this is not a toy, this is a great item for anyone (not just kids) who are interested in observing things, you can actually look at the ants for a long time watching them working in there. It's amazing, we all love it.

I got this for my 9 year old Grandson and he just LOVES watching the ants in it; a different kind of ant house but a good one! Thanks!
