A Fine Read March 26, 2008 IDRAFT I've spent many years involved in youth Basketball and Lupica captures it very well. Both my young son and I enjoyed the book, and the basketball games themselves flowed nicely. A little hackneyed backstory (in youth basketball the little guys are the stars as bigger kids grow into their coodination so the "poor little guy" angle was tough to take) but it's all well presented and the targeted audience will believe. Overall something to recommend.

My review is on Travel Team by Mike Lupica. Travel Team is about a pre-teen Danny Walker who loves to play basketball, and is amazing too. His height is one exception. In this book, even with Danny's height, he is still one of the best players on his travel team and in his town. Danny Walker lives with his mom in New Jersey. His dad was one of the world's best basketball players till when in the NBA, he had an accident that ended his career. When his dad came to town things changed. Although Danny this year didn't make the travel team like the last 3 years, that doesn't stop him and his dad to start their own travel team. After everything Danny goes all the way to becoming on of the best players in Middletown, New Jersey. I give this book five stars. The reason is because it shows how a passion can go a long way into becoming a fulfilled dream. It shows teamwork, perseverance, a lot of effort to be the best. I believe this book is great for those who like sports.

Travel Team - It's a Slam Dunk February 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have you ever had more passion for a sport than anyone you know but been cut from the team because another kid had more talent than you? If so, then you know exactly how Danny Walker feels in the book TRAVEL TEAM by Mike Lupica. TRAVEL TEAM is the present-day, fictionalized, first-hand account of twelve year old Danny Walker, who is cut from the seventh grade travel basketball team in Middletown, Long Island. This is not such a big deal, right? Except for the fact that Danny's father, Richie Walker, took the team to the nationals when he was twelve and then went on to play in the NBA. As if that is not bad enough, Danny thinks he was cut from the team for being too short and because the travel team's coach has a grudge against his dad. Will Danny give up on basketball altogether, or will his dad finally come through for Danny and help him show the travel team what kind of talent they passed up? TRAVEL TEAM is an absolutely amazing book for several reasons. First, the book has important lessons in it including that people can change. This became apparent on page 177 where it says, "I let myself get messed-up `cause of drinking one last time. Haven't touched a drop since, if you want to know." Richie tells this to Danny so he knows that Richie has made an effort to change and has succeeded. Second, when Danny was cut from the team but still moved on to play on his own team, it showed that you should not let others make you feel inferior and always strive to do your best. The last lesson and my favorite lesson in the book, is that you can do anything with the support of friends and family. Danny was able to coach his own team because on page 202 it says, "`Why don't we ask the Warriors, and their new assistant coach, Tess to vote'...then the rest of them got up...`DAN-ny! DAN-ny! DAN-ny!'" The theme of the book is also a fantastic lesson because it is about perseverance. Danny has enough perseverance to work with his newly formed basketball team and hopefully make it to the nationals. Finally, I enjoyed this book because it shows how two characters can grow, in this case Danny and Richie. Richie grows by sticking around instead of leaving Danny again. You can see this on page 256, "Next to her, one crutch under his right arm, the left one up in the air a little bit as he tried to balance on his new cast, was Richie Walker." This shows that Richie now cares enough to show up at Danny's basketball game on crutches. Danny also grows by building the courage to tell his father how he feels about him when he says on page 213, "Danny said, `I love you Dad.'" He was able to grow and forgive his dad for leaving him as a baby. Since this book has several important lessons, I would recommend that kids ages 10 and up read this book because it is written in a style that will hold the readers' attention and leave them with suspense, but also keeps moving and flows easily. Of course, I also recommend this book to all sports fans and athletes. TRAVEL TEAM will have you cheering until the end!
Awesome! By JG from North Boulevard December 6, 2007 The book I am reviewing is Travel Team written by Mike Lupica. I think this book deserves five stars. It's terrific because I love basketball too, I really loved the plot. This book is about an 11 year old boy that is very short. He tries to make the travel team but he didn't. So his dad, Richie Walker, says Danny can have his own travel team that his dad can coach. The problem is when Danny has his first game against the Vikings and Danny couldn't think of a name for the team. But his dad was wearing a warriors jersey so Danny says we can be the warriors. I would recommend this book to boys who like basketball. Other books by Mike Lupica are miracle on 49th street.
