Good book - entertaining but not too deep. The perfect book to read at the beach!

5 out of 5 stars It Was Like I Was There Myself!   October 22, 2008

This book took me away to another place! It was a simple read that had me caring about every character on every page. I couldn't wait to read it and was sad when I was finished! Great book for those who like it simple, smart, and don't mind being wisked away to another place!

3 out of 5 stars fun and breezy read   October 21, 2008

I enjoyed this book, if only because it was a mindless story to get wrapped up in. Good development of characters but predictable story line.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book But The Wrong Country!   October 18, 2008

I just finished the Beach House and I enjoyed the story very much - It was a fast read with entertaining characters and a clear moral! A few tears at the end made it memorable for me. Good Stuff!

My only problem with this book was trying to figure out if all of the characters were expatriate Brits or actually Americans. Although they ive in Connecticut, New York or Massachusetts, all of the character's manner of speech is totally British! When was the last time you heard a real American say "should have done" or "that bit" or describe someone as "lovely" or call a cigarette a "ciggie"? The little girl, Jess, when asked to do something actually says "shall I?" Oh sure - the last time a thirteen year old American girl said "shall I" was probably back in the colonial days - if that! On every page, there are little phrases of British speak so even though the most of the story is supposed to take place on Nantucket Island, you have to constantly remember this because of the way the characters speak. Now in To Have and To Hold, the story begins in London and Green's characters, who eventually move to America, are British so using British terms and slang would be perfectly acceptable in that setting. In Beach House, I distinctly got the impression her characters were supposed to be Americans although Nan's character had British parents. Brit transplant Green may need to do more research into the way Americans speak so she can portray them with realistic and appropriate voices.

3 out of 5 stars Quick read but predictable   October 18, 2008

This was definitely a quick summer read. Nothing extraordinary but it still kept my interest. The plots were pretty predictable and the characters not overly developed. She did capture the flavor of Nantucket life and the difference between New England wealth and the wealth in places like the Hamptons.
